Born in Manchester on October 5, 1942, he was a midfielder who began his professional career with Blackpool in 1960, making his debut in the opening match of the 1960–61 league season. He marked his first goal for the club in a 3–1 defeat away to Tottenham on August 31, 1960, and later added two more in the closing weeks of the 1962–63 campaign, scoring against Arsenal at Bloomfield Road and Manchester City at Maine Road.
