Mostafa Derkaoui, the Moroccan film director and screenwriter known for socially engaged and revolutionary films, died on August 20, 2026, aged 82.
Born in Oujda in 1944, he studied philosophy in Casablanca in the early 1960s and began writing plays, including one that was banned for political reasons. He later spent eight months in 1963 studying at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques in Paris before returning to Morocco and making his first short film, The Four Walls.
Derkaoui went on to direct films including Casablanca by Night and Les amours de Hadj Mokhtar Soldi.
