Deborah Dultzin Mexican astrophysicist dead at age 80

Deborah Dultzin, a Mexican astrophysicist and professor and researcher at the Institute of Astronomy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), died on March 30, 2026.

Born in Monterrey on October 9, 1945, Dultzin Kessler, also published as Deborah Dultzin-Hacyan, specialized in quasars, blazars, active galactic nuclei and supermassive black holes. She completed a degree in physics and later continued her studies in the Soviet Union with support from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.

She was the daughter of Arieh Dulzin and Fredzia Kessler.

Deborah Dultzin Kessler (also published as Deborah Dultzin-Hacyan; 9 October 1945 – 30 March 2026) was a Mexican astrophysicist specializing in quasars, blazars, active galactic nuclei, and supermassive black holes. She was a professor and researcher at the Institute of Astronomy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
