Miguel Mancera, the Mexican economist who directed the Bank of Mexico from 1982 to 1998, died on August 10, 2026, aged 93.
Also known as Miguel Mancera Aguayo, he was born in Mexico City and studied economics at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and at Yale University. Before taking up senior public office, he worked at the Bank of Commerce from 1953 to 1955 and taught at the Escuela Libre de Derecho, the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and the Latin American Center of Monetary Studies.
He also received the King of Spain Prize in Economics and a Woodrow Wilson Award.
