Alfonso Sánchez Anaya, the Mexican politician who served as deputy, senator and governor of Tlaxcala, died on July 26, 2026.

He was 85. Born in Apizaco on January 23, 1941, Sánchez Anaya was trained as a veterinarian at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and later became one of Tlaxcala’s prominent elected officials.

Affiliated at different times with the Institutional Revolutionary Party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution and Morena, he represented Tlaxcala’s 2nd district in the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 1997. He then served as governor of Tlaxcala from 1999 to 2005 before going on to the Senate, where he represented the state during the 60th and 61st legislatures from 2006 to 2012.
