More about Arnaldo Coen
Arnaldo Coen, a Mexican visual artist associated with the Generación de la Ruptura, died on November 8, 2026, aged 86.
Born in Mexico City on June 10, 1940, he began as an autodidact before studying graphic design with Gordon Jones from 1956 to 1960. His work encompassed painting, sculpture, illustration and stage design.
Coen’s earliest paintings drew on abstract expressionism; from 1964, he developed cubist-fantastical works associated with expresionismo fantástico, including large-scale murals. A state scholarship took him to Paris in 1967 for a study trip. The following year, he was among the founders of Mexico’s Salón Independiente, adding an organizational role to his work across artistic disciplines. In the 1975–76 series Mutations, Coen experimented with geometric forms, a direction that helped prepare the way for his sculptural work. The series marked a further phase in a career that moved among different media and approaches, from abstract painting to fantastical imagery and geometric experimentation. Se junto en la tierra is among his notable works. His development brought together self-directed beginnings, graphic-design training and successive shifts in visual form, while his practice extended from murals and painting to sculpture and stage design.
