Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a civil engineer and politician, died October 28, 2026, aged 92.
Born in Mexico City on May 1, 1934, he was the son of Lázaro Cárdenas, who served as president of Mexico, and Amalia Solórzano. He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and trained as an engineer before entering public life.
In 1976, he was elected to the Senate representing Michoacán, and he served as the state’s governor from 1980 to 1986. Cárdenas helped found the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and became the first head of government of the Federal District, now Mexico City. He sought Mexico‘s presidency three times. His 1988 loss to Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Carlos Salinas de Gortari was long considered the result of electoral fraud by the ruling party, a view later acknowledged by Miguel de la Madrid, who was president at the time. Cárdenas was a prominent social democrat and received Mexico‘s Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor.
