Gabino Palomares, the Mexican singer-songwriter and political activist, died on September 30, 2026, at age 76.
Born in Comonfort, Guanajuato, he became one of the leading figures of the nueva canción movement in Latin America and a founder of Mexico’s canto nuevo movement. He was identified with socially engaged songwriting and recorded more than a hundred songs spanning social, political and love themes.
Among his best-known works was “La maldición de Malinche,” written in 1978 and widely regarded as one of the movement’s signature songs.
