Andrés Mendoza, a Mexican convicted serial killer and butcher, died on October 29, 2026, aged 78.
Born Andrés Filomeno Mendoza Celis in Zimatlán de Álvarez, Oaxaca, he was captured in Atizapán de Zaragoza, in the State of Mexico. For several years he worked as a butcher at a slaughterhouse in Tlalnepantla, preparing meat for human consumption; his trade was cited as a source of his knowledge of cutting and dismembering bodies.
In 2015, he was president of his neighborhood’s citizen participation council during the municipal administration of Ana María Balderas Trejo. Authorities initially considered him likely responsible for at least 19 murders, while estimates of the possible number of victims reached 30 or more. A search of his home in June 2021 uncovered 3,787 bones; by June 2022, reports put the number of skeletal remains at 4,600. Those remains were believed to represent 19 people: 17 women, a child and a man. Mendoza was convicted of murders in 2022 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also known as El Descuartizador de Atizapán, El Monstruo de Atizapán and El Chino.
