Juan Atkins, an American record producer, techno musician and DJ known for his work with the Belleville Three and Cybotron, died of a heart attack on November 1, 2026, aged 64.
Born in Detroit on September 12, 1962, he later moved with his family to Belleville, Michigan, where he attended Belleville High School. There, he met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson; the three became known as the Belleville Three, a central association in Atkins’ career.
He began making music professionally in 1980, the year he formed Cybotron with Richard Davis. The duo released its debut album, “Enter,” in 1983, before Atkins and Davis parted ways two years later. Atkins had taken an early interest in electronic instruments, buying his first synthesizer, a Korg MS-10, at 15. As a recording artist, he also used the names Model 500 and Infiniti, among other aliases. His work across production, DJing and performance helped shape Detroit techno, and Mixmag described him as “the original pioneer of Detroit techno.” In addition to Cybotron and the Belleville Three, his musical associations included Borderland. His career spanned more than four decades, from the start of his professional work in 1980 through 2026.
