Sanjay Gupta, the Indian film director whose work included Kaabil, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Jazbaa, died in a fall on October 30, 2026, aged 59.

Born in Mumbai on April 14, 1967, Gupta began his film career with Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994), which starred Aditya Pancholi and Sanjay Dutt. He went on to write and direct films including Ram Shastra, Khauff and Jung; filming on Jung lasted more than two years.

Gupta became known for Hindi films that remade or drew on American action-thriller and crime stories. His credits included Kaante, Shootout at Wadala, Karam and Zinda, and Mumbai Saga, and he frequently cast Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham. Zinda, released in 2006, was described as an unofficial remake of the South Korean film Oldboy. During production of Kaante in Los Angeles in 2001, the September 11 attacks led the crew to move planned scenes away from several areas considered sensitive. Across a career that began in 1994, Gupta worked as a director, producer and screenwriter, building a filmography centered on Hindi action and crime dramas.
