Howard Lyman, an American farmer and animal rights activist, died in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 27, 2026, aged 88.
Born Howard Fenn Lyman in Great Falls, Montana, on September 17, 1938, he was raised as a fourth-generation rancher on a farm producing dairy and meat. He attended Montana State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in general agriculture in 1961.
After graduation, he spent two years in the U.S. Army before returning to work on the family farm. From 1963 to 1983, Lyman was actively engaged in animal and grain production. His work included dairy and pork production; raising registered Hereford cattle, chickens and range cattle; feedlot beef and veal production; and growing grain and producing silage and hay. His public work as a writer, lecturer and activist brought attention to vegan nutrition and organic farming, causes he promoted within the animal rights movement. In 1997, the Peace Abbey awarded him its Courage of Conscience Award in recognition of his leadership in that movement. His career thus spanned hands-on farming and advocacy focused on food and agricultural practices.
