Josip Pečarić, a Croatian mathematician and writer whose work centered on the theory of inequalities, died October 29, 2026, aged 79.

Born in Kotor, then part of Yugoslavia, he completed elementary and secondary school there before studying at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in 1972 and 1975, then remained at the university for doctoral study in mathematics, completing a PhD in 1982 under Petar Vasić.

His master’s supervisor, mathematician Dobrilo Tošić, encouraged his turn toward mathematics. Pečarić’s dissertation examined Jensen’s and related inequalities, a subject that became central to his mathematical work. He joined the University of Zagreb in 1987 and became a professor in its Faculty of Textile Technology. He was also a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Across his career, he wrote or co-wrote more than 1,200 mathematical publications, an extensive body of work in the field for which he was known. Pečarić also published works on history and politics. Some of those writings have been described as historical negationism or Holocaust denial, a characterization associated with that part of his publishing record rather than his mathematical research.
