Born in Zagreb in 1961, she studied humanities at the University of Zagreb, where she later earned a doctorate in 1992. Zlatar-Violić was also an editor of the literary magazines Vijenac, Zarez and Gordogan, and from December 2011 to March 2015 she served in the centre-left government of Zoran Milanović as Croatia’s minister of culture, becoming the country’s second woman to hold the post.
