Born in Ivanovci on July 6, 1937, to Marko and Katja (née Orešković), he came from a Croatian Roman Catholic family in what is now Osijek-Baranja County. He attended the Archdiocesan Classical Gymnasium in Šalata, Zagreb, then completed his secondary-school examination at the lyceum of the Theological College in Đakovo.
He continued his education at the Theological Faculty of the University of Zagreb, where he earned a licentiate in theology. On March 6, 1960, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Đakovo or Bosnia and Srijem, his home diocese. In 1990, Srakić became an auxiliary bishop of that diocese and titular bishop of Cercina, serving in those roles until 1996. He led the diocese in that capacity until its elevation to the Archdiocese of Đakovo–Osijek in 2008, when he became its first archbishop. Srakić remained in that office until his retirement in 2013.
