Stephen Kovacevich, the American classical pianist and composer, died October 27, 2026, aged 86.
Born in San Pedro, California, to a Croatian father and an American mother, he made his concert debut at 11. At 18, he moved to London on a scholarship to study with pianist Dame Myra Hess and remained a London resident, later living in Hampstead.
His European debut came in 1961 at Wigmore Hall, where he played Alban Berg’s Sonata, three Bach preludes and fugues, and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. After his mother remarried, he performed as Stephen Bishop. Finding that audiences often confused him with singer and guitarist Stephen Bishop, he began using Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich, later adopting the name Kovacevich. He became particularly celebrated for recordings of Beethoven, Bartók and Schubert. His playing was noted for technical skill, clarity and an intelligent approach to interpretation. Alongside his work as a pianist, he was also a conductor, and received the Walter Willson Cobbett Medal.
