Oswaldinho do Acordeon, the Brazilian accordionist and composer, died October 25, 2026, aged 72.
Born Oswaldo de Almeida e Silva in Duque de Caxias on June 5, 1954, he was the son of accordionist Pedro de Almeida e Silva, known as Pedro Sertanejo, and Noêmia Lima e Silva. His father was a pioneer of forró in São Paulo.
Oswaldinho recorded his first record at eight and received his first eight-bass accordion from his father, an instrument on which he became a modern exponent. Over his career, he participated in hundreds of recordings with artists from several countries and was recognized internationally for his versatility. One of his major successes was a fusion of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with northeastern Brazilian rhythms. His repertoire ranged from ‘Asa Branca,’ by Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira, to works by Astor Piazzolla, John Lennon, Bach and Beethoven, alongside Brazilian popular music and northeastern regional music.
