Born in Tamil Nadu on December 25, 1951, he was the son of Varadammal and A. Ramasamy, whose family background was in weaving.
Both his parents had musical knowledge, and two of his five elder brothers were interested in the arts. Krishnaraj completed the intermediate-school final examination at Vembadithalam in 1971, then spent 10 years working in the weaving trade. During that period, he learned songs and musical instruments largely by listening. In 1984, he received the Sangeetha Vidwan and Best Student awards from a music college; they were presented by M. G. Ramachandran, then chief minister of Tamil Nadu. That year, Krishnaraj also worked as an assistant to composer R. Ramanujan on the film Arah, which was not released. He later sang devotional songs at Hindu and Christian religious events for other composers. Across his work, he was known for singing more than 3,000 songs, including over 300 for the Tamil film industry. His career included playback singing as well as earlier work as an assistant music composer.
