Yasuo Fukuda, a Japanese politician who served as prime minister, chief cabinet secretary and member of parliament, died on October 22, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Takasaki on July 16, 1936, he was the eldest son of Takeo Fukuda, who later became prime minister, and studied at Waseda University. Before entering national politics, his career included work at Cosmo Oil Company.
Fukuda served in the House of Representatives from 1990 to 2012. As chief cabinet secretary under Prime Ministers Yoshirō Mori and Junichiro Koizumi, he held the post from 2000 to 2004, at the time the longest tenure in Japanese history; Yoshihide Suga later surpassed that record. Following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s resignation, Fukuda was elected president of the Liberal Democratic Party and became prime minister in September 2007. He was the first son of a former Japanese prime minister to serve in the office. Fukuda led the government until 2008. On September 1 of that year, he announced his resignation as LDP leader, and Tarō Asō succeeded him.
