William Lorn Kerr Cowie, Lord Cowie, the Scottish rugby union player who played for West of Scotland and represented Scotland internationally, died October 23, 2026, aged 100.
Born in Glasgow on June 1, 1926, Cowie was educated at Clare College before pursuing a legal career. He joined the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh in 1952 and served as an Advocate Depute in the Crown Office until 1967, when he was appointed Queen’s Counsel.
After returning to the Advocate Depute role in 1969, he remained in it until 1977. That year, he became a Senator of the College of Justice, taking his place in Scotland’s senior judiciary. His title, Lord Cowie, was associated with that judicial appointment. His career took him from the Faculty of Advocates to Crown Office service and, ultimately, the College of Justice, with the Crown Office work spanning two periods as Advocate Depute. Alongside those legal offices, his sporting record included appearances for West of Scotland and Scotland’s national rugby team.
