Sandra Yanira Martínez Tobar, a Salvadoran meteorologist and politician who served as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly, died October 25, 2026, aged 66.
Born in San Salvador, she became the first woman to work in El Salvador’s National Meteorological Service, later known as the Environmental Observatory of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Her interest in meteorology began at 19, when she received a scholarship through a program promoted by the service and the University of El Salvador.
She graduated from the University of El Salvador and was a fellow of the World Meteorological Organization, where she specialized in aeronautical, hydrological and maritime meteorology. For 19 years, she worked in aeronautical meteorology at Comalapa and Ilopango airports. She retired from the national service in 2019, then entered elected public service. In the legislative and municipal elections held February 28, 2021, Martínez Tobar was elected as a deputy for La Libertad Department. Her term in El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly ran from May 1, 2021, to May 1, 2024.
