Slavcho Binev, a Bulgarian politician and former Member of the European Parliament, died aged 60 in Sofia on October 24, 2026, after being shot.
Born in Sofia as Slavcho Penchev Binev, he was also known as Slavi Binev and became a prominent figure in Bulgarian politics and sport. Before his political career, he competed in taekwondo and won the European championship in 1992.
From the early 1990s until 2006, he was among the principal shareholders of R – System Holding AD, a business group that brought together more than 100 companies across service, entertainment, construction, investment and security. Binev entered the European Parliament in 2007, elected for the nationalist Attack party on May 20, shortly after Bulgaria joined the European Union. He served as an MEP until 2014. With Attack’s other representatives, he initially joined the Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty group, which dissolved in November 2007; the party’s MEPs then sat as non-inscrits. In 2007, Binev also stood as Attack’s candidate for mayor of Sofia. He attended Alphonse-de-Lamartine High School. His daughter, Elena Bineva, is a rhythmic gymnast.
