Konstantin Trenchev, a Bulgarian physician and syndicalist who led the Confederation of Labour Podkrepa, died November 6, 2026, aged 71.

Born in Stara Zagora on February 8, 1955, he received his education in medicine before becoming a founder and leader of the labor organization. Trenchev established Podkrepa in February 1989 and served as its president until 2015.

He was reelected as its chairman in February 1997, and at the confederation’s eighth congress in February 2011, he was persuaded to continue in the role. Those milestones marked successive decisions by the organization to retain him in its leadership, first through reelection and later at its congress. Alongside his union work, Trenchev took part in the Union of Democratic Forces: he was among its founding members and served on its Coordinating Council. His political involvement thus included both the formation of the party and a place on the body responsible for coordinating its work. He also supported using European Union funds to help firms and individuals obtain patents, an approach aimed at enabling both businesses and private applicants to secure patent grants. His career encompassed medical education, labor organizing and political activity in Bulgaria, with Podkrepa and the Union of Democratic Forces forming the central institutions in his public work.
