More about Ali-Asghar Fani
Ali-Asghar Fani, an Iranian politician and former minister of education, died November 5, 2026, aged 72.
Born in Tehran on January 3, 1954, he studied at the University of Tehran and worked as a civil engineer. He was also employed by Tarbiat Modares University.
Fani had previously served as acting education minister in 2005. He returned to the post on August 23, 2013, taking on the acting role after parliament rejected Mohammad-Ali Najafi, who had been nominated for the ministry. President Hassan Rouhani subsequently nominated Fani for the position, and parliament voted in favor of his appointment. The sequence moved him from an interim assignment to a formal ministerial role. Fani remained in the post until October 19, 2016, when he resigned as part of a reshuffle of Rouhani’s cabinet. His service therefore included two periods as acting minister, separated by several years, before his formal appointment and departure during the 2016 cabinet changes. He died in Lafayette.
