Marta Gastón Menal, a Spanish economist and politician who served as Aragon’s minister of economy and employment, senator and deputy, died of cancer on November 3, 2026, aged 53.

Born in Huesca on February 2, 1973, she graduated in economics and worked as a business manager for a bank before entering elected politics. A member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Gastón was elected to the Senate for Huesca province in 2004 and served there until 2008.

She also won election to Huesca’s municipal council in 2007. In the 2008 general election, she chose to run for the Congress of Deputies rather than seek another Senate term, and was elected as the second candidate on the PSOE list for Huesca. She served in the Congress from 2008 to 2011. Her later regional role placed her in charge of economy and employment in Aragon from 2015 to 2023. Her career thus encompassed elected office in Huesca, representation in Spain’s national legislature and a senior post in the regional government. The path from bank business management to public office began with her election to the Senate and continued through municipal, congressional and regional responsibilities.
