Ignaty Lapkin, a Russian Orthodox preacher and author who also worked as a missionary, blogger and poet, died November 2, 2026, aged 87.

Born in Karpovsky, in Russia’s Altai region, he attended the Riga Nakhimov Naval School. In the 1990s, Lapkin established several religious associations, which the Russian Orthodox Church regarded as sectarian.

He informally identified with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church, but the former barred his communities from claiming affiliation with it. Lapkin and his community also declined to follow directives from the Russian Orthodox Church, a stance described by a religious-studies scholar cited in the Russian-language account as schismatic. Lapkin became widely known for his activities in Poteryaevka, an abandoned village where he organized a children’s camp. The camp was later closed amid an investigation by Russia’s consumer-protection agency. Accounts of the site cited violations of Russian law, child labor and corporal punishment. Lapkin’s public work combined preaching and missionary activity with writing and online publishing; his religious affiliations and the organization of his community remained subjects of dispute.
