Miquel Navarro, Spanish sculptor, painter and contemporary poet, died on November 1, 2026, aged 81.
Born in Mislata, Valencia, on September 29, 1945, he studied painting at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia from 1964 to 1968. In 1972, he shifted his main focus to sculpture, while continuing to paint and write poetry.
Navarro’s work has been described as eclectic, with influences from postmodernism, minimalism and the avant-garde. The following year, he presented his first “Ciutat,” a sculptural form that became one of his principal modes of work. His sculptures used fire-resistant materials as well as terracotta and sand. Between 1975 and 1980, he exhibited works including “Pirámide” and “Els altres 75 anys de pintura valenciana.” His exhibitions during that period included venues in Valencia, among them the Valencia Architects School, and Madrid galleries Vandrés and Ponce. Across sculpture, painting and poetry, Navarro maintained a practice that moved between artistic forms while keeping sculpture at its center. He died in Mislata, the town where he was born.
