José Luis García Sánchez, the Spanish film director and screenwriter, died October 25, 2026, aged 85.

Born in Salamanca on September 22, 1941, he worked in cinema as a director, screenwriter and producer. His career began in 1964, and he directed 30 films from 1968 onward.

His film credits included Habla, mudita, The House Must Be Unmade and Dearest Maria, while his work also encompassed writing and film production. In 1973, he wrote for Habla, mudita, which was entered in the 23rd Berlin International Film Festival. Five years later, he directed Las truchas, or Trouts, which won the Golden Bear at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival. The two Berlin festival milestones reflected different parts of his work: the earlier film was one he wrote for, while the later award-winning film was directed by him. Across a career spanning directing and screenwriting as well as production, he made 30 films from 1968 onward. García Sánchez was married to Rosa León. His filmography thus included festival-recognized work as both a screenwriter and director, alongside the other titles associated with his career.
