Xosé Manuel Beiras, a Spanish politician, economist and Galician nationalist, died in Santiago de Compostela on October 8, 2026, aged 90.
Born Xosé Manuel Hixinio Beiras Torrado in Santiago on April 7, 1936, he became a professor of structural economy at the University of Santiago de Compostela and was also a writer and intellectual. He graduated in law from the university in 1957, then went to Paris to study economics at the Sorbonne, along with French language and literature.
In 1960, he taught political economy at the Complutense University of Madrid; the following year, he moved to London to study at the London School of Economics. A Juan March Foundation scholarship enabled him to take a research course with economist François Perroux in Paris in 1966–67. Beiras represented Galicia in its parliament from 1985 to 2005 and again from 2012 to 2016. He was a member of the National Council of the Galician Nationalist Bloc and later led Renewal–Nationalist Brotherhood, an independentist party. His work in economics and his political activity were closely connected to his advocacy of Galician nationalism.
