Pilar Burgués Monserrat, an Andorran writer, died on October 24, 2026, aged 67.
Born in Escaldes-Engordany in 1958, she came from a family of doctors; her parents originally came from the Matarraña region. Monserrat studied geography and history at the University of Zaragoza, earning a diploma in the subject.
While a student, she took part in archaeological excavations at Sant Vicenç d’Enclar, led by Xavier Llovera and Jordi Guillament. After returning to Andorra, she first worked as a teacher, then pursued literary and bibliographic work. She contributed to the literary review Ex-libris Casa Bauró and worked at the National Library of Andorra on both a bibliography and a catalogue of the Andorran government’s publications. Some of the publications she produced through this work became standard references. Alongside this documentation of Andorran publishing, Monserrat wrote short stories and published two collections. The Àgora Cultura Prize, awarded to her in 2022, recognized her work. Her career thus encompassed fiction, literary publishing and the creation of bibliographic resources concerning the country’s government publications, alongside her early work in teaching.
