Born in Paeroa on May 4, 1937, he made 33 first-class appearances for Northern Districts between 1956 and 1964. An opening batsman and occasional medium-pace bowler, Shaw recorded his highest first-class score in the 1957–58 Plunket Shield, making 78 in the first innings against Central Districts and 40 in the second.
He top-scored for Northern Districts in both innings of the match, which his side won. That season, he was Northern Districts’ most successful batsman in the Plunket Shield, scoring 283 runs at an average of 28.30. Shaw also played rugby union for Thames Valley from 1957 to 1966. His rugby years overlapped with his first-class cricket career, and continued beyond his final season for Northern Districts.
