At Brunel University of London, he was a professor and served as head of its Department of Social and Political Sciences. His career combined academic work with sustained engagement in Marxist political thought, particularly through his study of Gramsci. His education across several European cities, followed by his work in London, formed part of an academic path that connected Australian scholarship with European political theory.
