June Jones, an American football player and coach whose full name was June Sheldon Jones III, died October 29, 2026, aged 73.
Born in Portland, Oregon, on February 19, 1953, he played quarterback professionally in the NFL and Canadian Football League after playing college football for the Oregon Ducks, Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and Portland State Vikings. Jones’s coaching career included head coaching positions with the Atlanta Falcons from 1994 to 1996, the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1999 to 2007, and Southern Methodist University from 2008 until his resignation in 2014.
He also served as interim head coach of the San Diego Chargers for 10 games in 1998 and spent a season and a half leading the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. Jones favored the run-and-shoot approach, a wide-open, pass-heavy offense, and was known for not holding full-contact practices. At SMU in 2010, sophomore tailback Zach Line rushed for more than 1,450 yards in 14 games, a total that ranked 11th among FBS rushers that season. Jones was also general manager and head coach of the Houston Roughnecks.
