Born in Kerman on February 7, 1939, he began his playing career with Shahin F.C. and was selected for Iran’s national team in 1958.

He later captained the national side. When he was four, his family moved to Tehran, where his father found work as a clerk for the Ministry of Health. Habibi moved to Taj S.C. in 1960, where he played for several seasons, before joining PAS Tehran in 1964. He remained with PAS until retiring from competition in 1971, and then coached the club. In 1979, he joined Iran’s national team as coach. The side qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics, but Iran’s Football Federation boycotted the Games because of the Soviet Union’s occupation of Afghanistan.
