Donald James Murray, the Scottish professional footballer known as Don Murray, died aged 80 on November 2, 2026, from complications of Lewy body dementia.
Born on January 18, 1946, he represented Scotland at under-23 level and made his name during a long association with Cardiff City. Murray began his career at Cardiff and made his first-team debut aged 80 against Middlesbrough in May 1963.
After establishing himself in the 1964–65 season, he held a first-team place for a decade, including three seasons as an ever-present. During a thirteen-year spell with Cardiff, he made more than 400 appearances in all competitions and set the club record for consecutive league appearances, with a run of 146 matches. Cardiff received offers for him from higher clubs, but he chose to remain for most of his career. Near the end of his Cardiff tenure, he spent a short loan spell at Swansea City, then returned to Scotland to join Heart of Midlothian for £15,000. The following year he moved to Newport County, where he linked up with former Cardiff manager Jimmy Scoular; in July 1977 he joined Barry Town. His career also included appearances for Swansea City, Hearts, Newport and Barry, alongside the many seasons he spent at Cardiff.
