Paul John Ferris, a Scottish writer and organised crime figure, died October 6, 2026, aged 62.
Born in Blackhill on November 10, 1963, he became an enforcer for Glasgow crime boss Arthur Thompson in the early 1980s and rose to prominence in the city’s criminal underworld. Ferris was known for his ruthlessness and extreme violence.
He served a prison sentence in 1984 for weapons possession and believed he had been betrayed by the Thompsons. In 1991, after Thompson’s son, Arthur Jr, was shot dead, Ferris was charged with his murder. He was found not guilty after a trial that was then the longest criminal trial in Scottish history. Ferris was imprisoned again from 1998 to 2002 for trading in firearms and possessing explosives. His writing career began behind bars: his first book was published in 2001, during that sentence. After his release, he wrote three more books about crime and became involved in the security industry. His life and career thus included both a prominent place in Glasgow’s criminal underworld and a later body of published work on crime.
