Víctor Hugo Ayala, the Colombian singer known for bolero recordings and his performance of the national anthem, died October 6, 2026, aged 92.
Born in Bogotá on June 13, 1934, he began singing in radio competitions and won first prize in a contest on Radio Santa Fe. In 1951, he began appearing regularly on Radio Santa Fe and on La Voz de Colombia and Nueva Granada.
At Nueva Granada, he was accompanied by Jaime Llano González. Broadcaster Hernán Restrepo Duque invited Ayala to record for Sonolux, where his first record was the bolero “Camino Verde.” His recordings included “Si Te Vuelvo a Besar,” a bolero particularly associated with his name. He was also known for performing Colombia’s national anthem, a distinct part of his musical work alongside his bolero repertoire. His early path to a singing career included schooling in Bogotá and five semesters studying architecture at a state university. Before pursuing music as his profession, he worked as an architectural draughtsman in the Colombian Navy. His biography thus includes both technical work and a sustained presence in radio and recorded music. His mother was Leonor Caro.
