Fusako Yusaki, the Japanese–Italian stop-motion animator, died October 6, 2026, aged 89.
Born in 1937, she studied at Brera Academy and became known for claymation, making animated works with plasticine. A designer, artist and sculptor as well as an animator, Yusaki brought these disciplines together in a career centered on film and visual art.
She lived in Italy from 1964 until her death and became an Italian citizen. Her work in clay animation also brought her recognition in Switzerland and Japan. Among her directing credits were Desertification (1993), Ippocrate (1998) and Winter Days (2003); she was also credited as a writer on Ippocrate. The range of her work reflected a career that crossed national borders while remaining closely associated with the plasticine animation she made in Italy. Yusaki died in Corsico, the city in northern Italy where the Italian-language biographical account records her death. Her filmography includes works made through 2005 as well as selected titles from later years, documenting an extended body of animation and film work.
