Known for: Topology, dynamical systems, Inventor of the Data Vortex.

Coke Reed, an American mathematician, computer scientist and inventor of the Data Vortex, died October 5, 2026, aged 86.

Born in Austin, Texas, in the United States, on March 8, 1940, he later completed a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin under Hubert Stanley Wall.

His listed fields included topology and dynamical systems; he was also identified as an inventor and cryptanalyst. Reed developed the proprietary Data Vortex network, which was implemented in supercomputers. Its architecture uses a novel topology and switch logic, drawing on a solution he and mathematician Krystyna Kuperberg gave to a problem posed by Stan Ulam in the Scottish Book. The mathematical result thus informed both the network’s arrangement and the logic used by its switches. Reed also founded Data Vortex Technologies, a privately held U.S. company composed largely of former members of the United States defense community. His invention was used in supercomputer implementations, while his academic training culminated in doctoral work at the university where he studied under Wall. Reed, who was from Austin, died in Lakeway, Texas.
