Dennis Meyer, the American football player and coach who played defensive back in the NFL and CFL, died October 5, 2026, aged 76.

Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, on April 8, 1950, he attended Jefferson City High School before playing at Arkansas State. There he became a two-time All-American defensive back, setting a school career record with 27 interceptions.

His 11 interceptions in 1970 remain a program high. Meyer was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1970 and 1971, and earned MVP honors at the 1970 Pecan Bowl after recording two interceptions in Arkansas State’s 38-21 win over Central Missouri. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the sixth round of the 1972 NFL Draft, but a knee injury sidelined him for that season. He appeared in 11 games for Pittsburgh in 1973 as a safety and punt returner, then joined the Portland Storm of the World Football League after being released before the 1974 season. Meyer later played in the Canadian Football League and, after his playing career, coached in the CFL, including with the Toronto Argonauts, as well as at the high-school level.
