John Evans, an English professional footballer and international bowls player, died on November 2, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Torquay on March 24, 1947, John Charles Evans began his football career as an apprentice with Torquay United, the club in his birthplace. He turned professional in April 1965 and played as a winger for the Plainmoor side.
His league record comprised six appearances and one goal before he left the club. Football would take second place to bowls, in which Evans went on to represent England internationally. He received his first England cap in 1973 and later became a regular member of the national team. At the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, he partnered Peter Line in the pairs competition, winning a silver medal. Evans’s sporting career thus encompassed both professional football and international lawn bowls: his early playing years were spent at Torquay United, while his later achievements included an England place and a Commonwealth Games podium finish. His best-documented result in bowls came in the pairs event, where he and Line secured silver in 1974.
