Geoffrey Richmond, the English football executive who chaired Scarborough F.C.

and Bradford City A.F.C., died October 30, 2026, aged 85. He chaired Scarborough from 1988 to 1994 before taking the Bradford City chairmanship on January 27, 1994, in an exchange of positions with David Simpson, who moved to Scarborough.

Richmond’s first major act at Bradford was to lend the club £2.3 million to clear its debts. He remained chairman until 2002, completing an eight-year tenure at the club after six years at Scarborough. Richmond was born in Leeds and attended Roundhay Grammar School. After leaving school, he worked as a salesman, going door to door to sell children’s encyclopedias and also selling car bulbs, bumper stickers and window stickers. He had initially retired before the age of 85. His business career included buying Ronson Lighters from receivers for £250,000 and selling the company in 1994 for £10 million. The sale and his arrival at Bradford City both fell in 1994, the year he moved from chairing Scarborough to leading the Bradford club. His career thus included commercial work as well as chairmanships at two English football clubs, with his Bradford tenure ending in 2002.
