Phil McDonald, an English audio engineer, died on October 27, 2026.
A recording-studio engineer at EMI and later Apple Records, he worked during the Beatles’ studio years alongside Geoff Emerick and other engineers. McDonald joined Apple as a senior balance engineer at 25.
Beyond the Beatles’ recordings, his engineering credits included work by John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the Rolling Stones, the Shadows and Badfinger. He also engineered recordings by Roy Harper, the Rhead Brothers, Roger Daltrey and Squeeze. The range of those projects encompassed Beatles members’ recordings outside the group as well as work by other artists and bands. McDonald divided his time between New York City and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He lived with his wife, Sandra, a former model and executive at Jones of New York. Away from the studio, his interests included gardening and mechanical engineering, and he built a fish pond. His career brought together work for EMI and Apple with sessions for a varied roster of performers, from Beatles members to groups and solo artists beyond the band.
