Boris Kolar, a Croatian film director and animator, died October 21, 2026, aged 94.
Born in Zagreb on April 13, 1933, he studied architecture there before beginning his career as a newspaper illustrator and caricaturist. His early move into animation came at Zora Film: in 1952, the 18-year-old Kolar prepared the shooting script for Crvenkapica (Little Red Riding Hood), described in the biographical account as the first animated color film in the region.
He soon began a sustained collaboration with director Dušan Vukotić, working chiefly as a lead animator and scenographer on Vukotić’s films. In 1956, Kolar was chief animator on Vukotić’s Nestašni robot (The Naughty Robot). The following year, he worked as scenographer on Cowboy Jimmy, a western parody, and on Susret u snu (A Meeting in a Dream), directed by Nikola Kostelac. These credits place his contribution in several stages of animated production, from preparing a film’s shooting script to animation and visual design. Alongside animation and direction, Kolar’s listed work included screenwriting, caricature, illustration and scenography, professions that linked his beginnings in newspaper art with his film career.
