Pino Presti, the professional name of Italian arranger Giuseppe Prestipino Giarritta, died October 28, 2026, aged 83.
Born in Milan on August 23, 1943, he entered music early: the son of violinist Arturo Prestipino Giarritta, he began studying piano and music theory at six. At 17, he started performing as a vocalist and bass guitarist in clubs while working as an instrumentalist in recording studios.
His career, which began in 1961 and continued through 2026, developed from bass playing into arranging, composition, conducting and record production. His work crossed pop, jazz, funk, soul and Latin music, and he played bass guitar, Fender Rhodes and percussion, building a career that encompassed studio and performance work. His collaborators included singer Mina, jazz musician Gerry Mulligan and Argentine musician Ástor Piazzolla; Presti appeared as a sideman on 24 recordings with Piazzolla. Alongside his music career, he held a fifth-dan black belt in Shotokan karate.
