Born July 6, 1933, in Mascara, he worked across video, photography, print media, mail, radio, television, telephone, telematics and the internet. He brought these forms into installations, performances and public interventions that examined the reach and possibilities of media space.
Forest co-founded the Sociological Art Collective in 1974 and the Aesthetics of Communication movement in 1983, linking his artistic practice to questions of society and communication. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1976 and Documenta in Kassel in 1977 and 1987. His work received awards at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1973 and the Festival of Electronic Arts in Locarno in 1995. In 2004, his archives, including video works, entered the collection of France’s Institut national de l’audiovisuel. Forest earned a state doctorate in the humanities from the Sorbonne in 1985. His thesis committee included Abraham Moles, Frank Popper and Jean Duvignaud. He also taught at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Cergy-Pontoise, the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis.
