Paul-Henri Rebut, a French nuclear physicist whose work was in nuclear fusion, died November 3, 2026, aged 90.
He studied physics at the École polytechnique in Paris and the École des Poudres before beginning nuclear-fusion research in 1958 with the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique (CEA), France’s atomic-energy commission. From 1970 to 1973, he contributed to the creation of TFR, a further milestone in the chronology of his work.
His authorship included two books published more than three decades apart: Ondes dans les plasmas inhomogènes en géométrie cylindrique (1966) and L’énergie des étoiles (1999). Their titles translate as Waves in Inhomogeneous Plasmas in Cylindrical Geometry and The Energy of the Stars. The earlier title sets out a specific subject in plasma physics, naming the waves, the inhomogeneous medium and the cylindrical geometry; the later turns to stellar energy in a concise formulation. The pair spans two different registers of presentation: a detailed technical title and a shorter, broadly framed one.
