Born Takashi Tsuchiya in Kitahiyama, Hokkaidō, he entered professional sumo in July 1964 and reached the top division in March 1972. His career peak was the rank of sekiwake.

After retiring in May 1979, he remained involved in the Japan Sumo Association as an elder under the name Kimigahama, coaching first at Kokonoe stable and later at Hakkaku stable after its establishment in 1993. He reached the association’s mandatory retirement age in July 2013.
