Thomas Hines, the American architectural historian and educator, died on July 26, 2026, at age 90.
Born Thomas Spight Hines, Jr., in Oxford, Mississippi, he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was professor emeritus of history and of architecture and urban design. A graduate of the University of Mississippi and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he wrote his doctoral dissertation on architect Daniel Burnham.
Hines received the John H. Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association in 1976 for Burnham of Chicago: Architect and Planner and later wrote extensively on Irving Gill, Richard Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright.
