She came from Brookline, Massachusetts, and worked in library sciences before joining the Shaker faith. In 1987, at 49, she converted after volunteering at the Shaker Library in New Gloucester, Maine.
Carpenter later lived and worked at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, where she was one of only three living members of the Shaker faith before her death. Brother Arnold Hadd was among the other Shakers living and working there. Together with community volunteers, members of the village operate a farm and a store and provide tours. Carpenter’s path to the Shaker community began through library work: she volunteered at its library before deciding to join the faith. Her professional background and her later life at Sabbathday Lake thus formed distinct chapters of a life connected to both library sciences and the Shaker community.
